SHELLHARBOUR MP ANNOUNCES COMMUNITY MEETING ON PROPOSED PRISON
The Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson MP, has today announced that she is convening a community meeting to hear the community’s opinions on the proposed correctional facility at Kembla Grange.
The community meeting will be held on Saturday, 19 May in the Sinclair Room at Dapto Leagues Club (Cnr Bong Bong Rd & Station St, Dapto) at 2:00 pm.
Ms Watson has also invited the Minister for Corrections, the Hon. David Elliott MP, and the Member for Kiama, Gareth Ward MP, to attend.
The Member for Shellharbour has previously criticised the Government’s poor attempt at community consultation.
Ms Watson called on the Minister to provide the community with firm details at the public meeting on the proposed correctional facility, including its size, scope, classification, expected construction cost, who will operate the facility and how many jobs would be created.
Quotes Attributable to Anna Watson MP:
“Gareth Ward couldn’t be bothered to meet with the community so I have organised this community meeting instead. I encourage anyone with a view on the prison proposal to come along and make their views known.
“I want to provide a forum so people can have their voices heard. A proposal such as this deserves more than a few short ‘drop-in’ sessions during the day. It is not proper community consultation if part of the community can’t come along and make their views known.
“I expect that the Minister and Mr Ward should be in a position to put clear details on the table about what correctional facility the Government is proposing for the Kembla Grange site at this public meeting.
“The local community has legitimate questions and concerns about the Government’s proposals and it’s time the Government comes ready with answers."
