PREMIER STAYS SILENT ON SHELLHARBOUR HOSPITAL

Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, has today renewed her calls on the Premier to properly fund and kick-start the long-awaited upgrade to Shellharbour Hospital.

The Premier was in the region this morning, 142 days before the 2019 state election, to announce a $434m upgrade to Shoalhaven Hospital. However, the Premier failed to mention when Shellharbour Hospital’s upgrade will commence.

The NSW Government promised a $251m upgrade to Shellharbour Hospital prior to the 2015 state election. Last year, the Minister for Health and Gareth Ward announced that this upgrade would commence this year. With two months left of 2018, there has been no indication of when the upgrade will start.

Since the upgrade was announced, there have been widespread concerns that the $251m promised would not be enough to fully upgrade the hospital. Last year, 82 local doctors were signatories to a letter calling on the Minister for Health to properly fund the upgrade.

Quotes Attributable to Anna Watson MP:

“Our community has been waiting far too long for this Government to upgrade our hospital. They are sick of paper-shuffling and empty words, they want action.

“Our message has always been clear: we want a properly-funded upgrade of Shellharbour Hospital, we want it to stay public and we want it upgraded now.

“The Government’s funding figures are now over five years old. It’s time to stop playing politics with important infrastructure; we want fair funding for our hospital.

“Today’s funding announcement is yet another kick in the guts for the Shellharbour community who are still waiting for the upgrade to our hospital to finally be delivered.”
