PEOPLE POWER PREVAILS
Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, has today welcomed the NSW Government’s announcement that Kembla Grange has been officially ruled out as a location for a new correctional facility.
“Common sense and people power has prevailed, and resulted in the NSW Government finally scrapping their plans to build a jail in Dapto’s backyard.
“Another day, and another embarrassing backflip for the Berejklian Government. This is a huge win for the people of West Dapto, and the Residents Against Dapto Jail group should be incredibly proud of what they’ve achieved.
“The Residents Against Dapto Jail group has spent the last five months fighting this proposal tooth and nail. Thankfully, the countless letters, emails, and phone calls they’ve made have all been worth it.
“In particular, I would like to thank the Residents Against Dapto Jail committee members; Ami and Stephen Beck; Britt and Eammon Bryant; Jess and Alen Meza; Mary Marciano, and Sonia Huseyin for their incredible efforts and for sacrificing so much of their time throughout this campaign.
“I would like to thank Opposition Leader, Luke Foley MP and the Shadow Minister for Corrections, Guy Zangari MP for listening to my community and recognising this proposal was both inappropriate and cruel over one month ago.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my Illawarra Labor colleagues at all levels of government for their support and efforts throughout this process.”
At this time, the 14,000 signature petition collected by the Residents Against Dapto Jail group is still due to be discussed in the NSW Legislative Assembly next Thursday, 20 September 2018 at 4.30pm.
