MP CALLS FOR OPAL TOP UP MACHINE AT SHELLHARBOUR JUNCTION STATION
Shellharbour MP, Anna Watson, has today written to the Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance, calling on him to install an Opal Card top up machine at Shellharbour Junction Station.
Ms Watson has previously asked the Minister whether there are any plans to install an Opal top up machine at the Station. The Minister failed to answer these questions, instead referring Ms Watson to the Opal website.
Despite Opal Cards being rolled out across the public transport network prior to the opening of Shellharbour Junction Station in 2014, an Opal Card top up machine is yet to be installed. This means local commuters must top up their cards elsewhere before going to the Station.
Shellharbour Junction Station is used by thousands of local commuters each month and an Opal Card top up machine is necessary to ensure they are able to add value to their balance before they catch a train.
Quotes Attributable to Anna Watson MP:
“I asked the Minister a simple question and he refused to answer it. The fact is that Opal Cards were rolled out years ago. It is a disgrace that Shellharbour Junction Station is still waiting for a top up machine in 2018.
“Every other station in the Shellharbour electorate has an Opal top up machine – I don’t understand why our newest station should miss out. To add insult to injury, there are no Opal retailers in the Station’s vicinity.
“This is yet another example of this Government ignoring the basic needs of the people of Shellharbour. We deserve better than this Government and their blatant disregard for our community.
“With the 2018-19 Budget just days away from being released, I sincerely hope the NSW Government hasn’t forgotten about Shellharbour Junction for the fifth year in a row.”
