MORIARTY & WATSON - SHELLHARBOUR HOSPITAL MENTAL HEALTH BED CLOSURE: MINISTER MUST TAKE OWNERSHIP
NSW Labor is calling on the Minister for Mental Health to address the closure of mental health beds at Shellharbour Hospital since November 2019.
In November 2019, five mental health beds were closed at the Eloura Mental Health Unit at Shellharbour Hospital due to staff shortages. Further beds were closed temporarily in the Mirrabook Mental Health Unit due to staff shortages.
Shadow Minister for Mental Health, Tara Moriarty said ‘it is unacceptable that these beds are still closed. We need the Minister for Mental Health to address this issue and fix this as a matter of urgency’.
‘We first and foremost must ensure staff and patient safety. If someone is seeking help, we must ensure the appropriate services are available to support them’ said Ms Moriarty.
State Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson said ‘Shellharbour and the Illawarra deserves better than this. We must ensure that people in our area that are seeking help are getting it. We cannot allow this to go on any longer’.
Ms Moriarty concluded by saying ‘We are calling on the Minister for Mental Health to intervene, ensure both patients and staff are safe, and make this issue a top priority’.
