BLOWOUTS AND BARE BONES: THE 2018-19 BUDGET FOR SHELLHARBOUR
The Member for Shellharbour has today condemned the 2018-19 Budget handed down to the electorate of Shellharbour by the NSW Government.
The $251 million budget for Shellharbour Public Hospital’s redevelopment has remained unchanged, ignoring repeated calls from 82 local senior doctors urging the Government to dedicate more funding towards the upgrade.
This figure, based on a service plan that is now well over five years old, has been labelled ‘inadequate’, by local doctors who are calling on the Government to update the service plan and ensure that this project is fully funded from the start.
The cost of the Albion Park Rail bypass is now clocking in at an estimated $630 million: a blowout of $80 million on the Government’s first estimate for the project.
There is no additional funding for much needed M1 on/off ramps along the M1 Motorway at Dapto.
No new schools have been announced for the electorate of Shellharbour, including the West Dapto area, despite the area’s growth rate.
Quotes Attributable to Anna Watson MP:
“This budget has delivered nothing more than blowouts and bare bones for the people of Shellharbour.”
“These are projects that have been on the drawing board for years, yet the Government still can’t get it right. On the one hand they’re skimping on services and underfunding our hospital’s redevelopment; on the other, the cost of the Bypass has already blown out by $80 million.
“If the Albion Park Rail bypass is going to come at a cost of $630 million, it had better include the on-time construction of the Yallah Interchange so that every member of our community will be able to access it.
“This Government still doesn’t get it. West Dapto is one the fastest growing areas in New South Wales.
“We don’t need band-aid solutions – we need new schools.”
