by Anna Watson
Member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson MP, has welcomed news that three local sports stars from the Shellharbour electorate, have been named to represent Australia at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Local A-League sensation Joel King and rising tennis star, Ellen Perez, have both been selected to compete at their first Olympic games.
Meanwhile, talented Shellharbour footballer Caitlin Foord has also been included in the Matildas squad for the Olympics and will be competing in her second Olympic games.
She has been selected to join the 18-woman squad representing Australia, with the Matilda’s set to open their Olympic campaign on 21 July against New Zealand before competing against Sweden and reigning World Champions and world number one USA.
Ellen Perez has been selected as a double’s player in Australia's Olympic team and will team up with Sam Stosur at the tournament.
“Ellen is the second highest Australian world ranked doubles player, second only to the great Ash Barty, which is no mean feat in itself. Her list of career achievements is already pretty impressive, and she can now add Olympian to that list” said Ms Watson.
2020/21 A-League young footballer of the year and former Shellharbour junior, Joel King, has been rewarded for a standout season with Sydney FC, by being named in the Olyroos 18-man squad for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Olyroos are set to compete against some of the best soccer nations in the world and 20 year old Joel is one of the youngest members of the Australian squad.
“Our region boasts a proud sporting history, having produced a number of outstanding sporting stars who have been elevated to the highest of representative honours.”
“I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone in the Shellharbour electorate when I say that we are so proud of Caitlin, Joel and Ellen and wish them every success in their Olympic campaigns.”
“I look forward to tuning in and cheering on our local stars as they take to the world stage to compete in their chosen sports” said Ms Watson.
